name: write-a-prd
description: Turn a product idea into an actionable PRD and GitHub issue through requirement discovery, codebase analysis, solution design, scope definition, and implementation planning. Use when user wants to design a feature, write a PRD, or plan product work.
This skill helps transform vague ideas into clear execution plans.
Adapt the depth based on task complexity: lightweight for small features, deep discovery for large initiatives.
Operating Modes
Choose one automatically:
-
Quick Mode
Use for small features, UI tweaks, copy changes, minor workflows.
Goal: fast PRD in one pass. -
Standard Mode
Use for normal features requiring some decisions and tradeoffs. -
Deep Dive Mode
Use for multi-module systems, unclear problems, or strategic initiatives.
Workflow
Step 1: Clarify the Goal
Understand:
- What problem are we solving?
- Who is the user?
- Why now?
- What does success look like?
- Is this new, or improving something existing?
Ask only the highest-leverage questions first.
Step 2: Explore Current State
Inspect repo / product context to understand:
- Existing related features
- Reusable modules
- Technical constraints
- Data models
- Integration points
- Risks / complexity hotspots
- Similar patterns already implemented
Step 3: Shape the Solution
Define:
- Core user flow
- Main functional requirements
- Edge cases
- Permissions / roles
- Empty states / failure states
- Metrics / observability needs
- MVP vs Later phases
Step 4: Design Implementation Approach
For each module define:
- Responsibility
- Inputs / outputs
- Dependencies
- Risks
- Testability
